Spanish Civil War, 1820–1823

The Spanish Civil War of 1820–1823 was fought in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. It was a conflict between royalists and liberals with Bourbon France intervening on the side of the royalists. The revolutionaries of 1820 succeeded in forcing the monarchs of Spain and the southern Italian kingdom of the Two Siciles to grant liberal constitutions against their wills. It also involved a French invasion of Spain in April 1823, aimed at restoring king Ferdinand VII to the Spanish throne. This invasion is known in France as the Spanish expedition (expédition d’Espagne), and in Spain as the Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis.

Trienio Liberal

Se conoce como trienio liberal o trieno constitucional a los tres años que transcurrieron entre 1820 y 1823. Se les denomina de esta manera porque, reinando Fernando VII «El Deseado», el 1 de enero de 1820 tuvo lugar en la localidad sevillana de Las Cabezas de San Juan el pronunciamiento militar del teniente coronel Rafael de Riego.

Tras un reducido éxito inicial, Riego proclamó inmediatamente la restauración de la Constitución de Cádiz (1812, La Pepa) y el restablecimiento de las autoridades constitucionales. El pequeño apoyo al golpe militar fue aumentando con el tiempo y prolongó el levantamiento hasta el 10 de marzo. En esa fecha se publicó un manifiesto de Fernando VII acatando la Constitución de Cádiz que, dos días antes, el 8 de marzo, había jurado en Madrid, y que establecía la monarquía parlamentaria, como forma de gobierno en el país.
